This question already has an answer here:

Download and install a driver yourself. In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager, then select Device Manager from the list of results. In the list of hardware categories, find the device that you want to update, and then double-click the device name. Click the Driver tab, click Update Driver, and then follow the instructions. The USB keyboard drivers contain the commands to tell the computer what type of input to expect when the USB keyboard is connected to the computer. The input from the keyboard will be received through the USB port whether the USB keyboard is wired or wireless, standard, virtual laser projection keyboards, ergonomic and foldable or roll-up. • Windows 7 can't find driver - deactivates keyboard and mouse 5 answers

For some reason, the Generic USB Keyboard driver was removed, literally, over night, from Windows.

Can someone that has Windows 7 and uses a USB Keyboard without any fancy drivers (i.e. uses Generic Windows USB Keyboard driver) go to

and post the name of the driver system files (for example 'C:Windowssystem32DRIVERi8042prt.sys')?

First off, try a system restore.

If that doesn't help, this is a General Fix for USB Driver Problems

  1. Unplug all USB devices except mouse and keyboard.

  2. Click on Start orb, Type Advanced System settings in the search box and Click on View Advanced System Settings to go there.

  3. Click on Advanced tab, Click on Environment Variables.

  4. Under the window 'System variables' Click on New.

  5. Type devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices as the variable name and type 1 as the value.

  6. Click OK 3 times to close the windows.

  7. Click on Start orb, Type Device Manager in the search box and Click on Device Manager in the list to go there.

  8. Click on View, then Show hidden devices.

  9. You will now notice that you have a list of USB devices and that some lines appear to be faded. Uninstall all the faded entries.

I would like to know how I can install the drivers for a generic USB keyboard in Windows 7 Pro 64 SP1. I know this is possible because, for my desktop computer, my keyboard worked out of the box. But when I plug the same keyboard into my laptop, it doesn't work.

The keyboard is a Sun type 7 keyboard with a Microsoft mouse plugged in. When I'm running Windows on my desktop computer (Lenovo M???), I see a 'Sun USB Keyboard' in my device list. When I look at the hardware and driver details, I see this: Download revit free.

  1. Generic USB Hub: usbhub.sys
  2. HID Keyboard Device: kbdclass.sys, kbdhid.sys
  3. USB Input Device: hidclass.sys, hidparse.sys, hidusb.sys

When I plug the same keyboard and mouse combo in my laptop (Dell E7440) running the very same version of Windows 7, it tells me it is an 'Unknown Device' for which it is unable to find drivers, even though I can see the six .sys files mentioned above under C:Windowssystem32drivers. I've tried plugging in the keyboard without the mouse and got the same result. (The mouse alone obviously works without problems.)

If that helps, my Sun keyboard works flawlessly in the BIOS.
